We can face this unbelievable tragedy together

News of the horrifying deaths of Dallas police officers and the heartbreaking deaths of two men in Baton Rouge, La. and Falcon Heights, Minn. leaves all of us at Dallas Leadership Foundation reeling with a profound sense of loss. Our heartfelt prayers are with the families of the victims here at home, and with the families who lost loved ones to violence in Baton Rouge, Falcon Heights, and beyond.
Dallasites attend a prayer service on Friday at Thanks-Giving Square.

The mind-boggling horror of violence crosses color, ethnicity, gender, rank, neighborhood and net worth. Its unique brutalities crush all of us with anguish. To lose a loved one suddenly or helplessly watch as life seeps from a loved one can devastate us. If we allow it, the fiery trail of violence will tempt us to fall into hopelessness and despair.

As we wrestle with our grief, especially here in Dallas, where we have befriended police officers, walked the neighborhoods with them, and leaned on them for help as well as protection, we can’t miss this opportunity. Dallas, like the rest of the nation, has the chance to seize this raw, agonizing moment and comfort, repair and rebuild — together.

Together we can make sure the foundations we build now sit on the bedrock of justice. Together we can uproot the loathsome issues that have weakened and crumbled previous foundations. Together we can rebuild the waste places, act justly, love mercy and walk humbly before our God, who cherishes each and every precious life.
